Our free interactive online modules have helped thousands of medical educators and trainees around the world teaching and learning echocardiography. These websites attract about 600,0000 visitors per year from over 200 countries around the world… but they are in danger of disappearing.
The problem
These modules were developed using Adobe Flash, which has become a problem for the following reasons:
- Web browsers are becoming wary of running Flash due to its potential for malicious exploitation. It is possible, in the next year or two, that browsers will no longer support Flash. Two of our modules are already experiencing problems in certain browsers.
- Flash modules do not run on smartphones or tablets.Flash modules do not run on smartphones or tablets.
Our solution
All of PIE’s recent application development has utilized HTML5, the current web standard. We need to convert these modules to HTML5, allowing them to run on any browser and make them mobile-friendly.
but ...
There is no base funding for PIE from University Health Network. All of the funding for developing these modules, (about $600,000) came from peer reviewed grants. For about a year we have been searching for funding to convert these projects. Unfortunately, peer reviewed grants will not fund maintenance or updating of existing software.
We need your help
We estimate the cost to convert our echocardiography modules to be $50,000, and we are asking for your help to reach our goal. We get comments from users on a weekly basis, so we know that you appreciate these free modules, and with your help we can keep them accessible for the future.
